Staying in the Philippines

With 7,107 islands making up one of the most populated countries in the world, the Philippines are a great place to visit with many attractions on offer. Here are some of the best things to do when visiting.

White Water Rafting – Challenging both mentally and physically, you’ll normally finish a day of rafting exhausted but exhilarated. The Philippines has several places which are good for the sport, such as Cagayan de Oro City in the northern part of Mindanao. Rivalling this, and also in Mindanao, is Davao which has become increasingly popular in recent years and is now one of the most visited for the sport in the whole of the Philippines. You’ll easily find companies which run rafting days, complete with an instructor and sometimes lunch, as well as all the safety briefs and equipment, all for a reasonable price.

Surfing – In contrast to overcrowded surf hot spots in Miami, Florida and Biarritz, the beaches of the Philippines offer good waves without the crowds. Whilst the breaks aren’t as consistent as nearby Indonesia, the wave will be your wave, and it’s really a matter of taste whether you want a grade A wave shared with 20 people surfing perilously close or a grade B wave to yourself. San Fernando, Catanduanes, Surigao Islands and Baler are all great surf spots in the Philippines where you will find surf school and surf hire places.

Culture – The Philippines have a significant cultural and historical wealth thanks to a rich history and influences from other world cultures. Having been colonised in the past by both the Spanish and, later the US, the Islands are one of only two Asian countries which lists Roman Catholic as its official religion. The food is a mix of western and eastern influences making up its best dishes, whilst the museums in the capital Manila is great for discovering more about the history of the country. Be sure to sample some of the local food and immerse yourself in the calm nature of the islands where relaxing and playing or listening to music are high on the agenda.
